Here is a short contemporary piece written for theremin and continuum by Canadian composer Aleks Schürmer: "Paris en feu". Deconstructing a melody by Michel Legrand, this composition can evoke a modern-day Satie seeing his city with yellow shirts, cathedrals and fire... Or whatever stimulates your imagination (a note from the composer explains that the piece is intended as "a meditation on the systems of oppression we participate in and our unwillingness to move past them" but I don't understand what it means) Combining the theremin and the continuum is quite a challenge, holding long harmonies with an uncertain intonation reinforces the eerie atmosphere of the piece... I patched the continuum to have a sound tasting somehow like strings, brass ensemble or multiple theremin togethers. Space Sister is the first single of Stephen Hamm's new album Theremin Man. Stephen Hamm has been a pivotal member of the Vancouver Music and Arts scene for over 25 years. He’s played in bands like Slow, Tankhog, Canned Hamm and Nardwuar And The Evaporators. The Georgia Straight once called him ‘legendary’. Stephen in recent years has shifted his focus to mastering the Theremin an early electronic instrument that one does not touch but plays by interacting with magnetic fields around two antennae. In recent years Stephen has studied under the tutelage of German Theremin virtuoso Carolina Eyck, Lydia Kavina and New York based Thereminist Dorit Chrysler. Stephen’s solo show, based around Theremin and Synthesizer is an electro musical journey into new abstract dimensions of sound!

"Fantaisie" for ondes Martenot and Piano (1930), by Pierre Vellones (1889-1939) Ondes Martenot - Charlie Draper Piano - Paul Jackson Recorded live at the University of Oxford, Saturday 11 May 2019. Pierre Rousseau Vellones was a French composer, painter and medical doctor. Diagnosed with Kahler's disease in 1926, he spent much of his life bedridden and keenly aware of his mortality. From 1930, he had a close and productive friendship with Maurice and Ginette Martenot, to whom he dedicated this piece. I love its extended harmony, gestural opening, and contrasts between drama and levity in this work.
